An eco story in last weekend’s The Observer has stayed with me all week.

The Plastiki is a revolutionary catamaran, kept afloat by 12,500 plastic bottles within its hulls. It is currently on an “eco adventure” to draw attention to our systematic pollution and over-fishing of the oceans.

As I write, the crew have been sailing across the Pacific Ocean for 120 days, and in that time we have used 7200 million plastic bottles worldwide. The Plastiki sailed through the “eastern garbage patch”, that floating continent of plastic waste trapped by ocean currents.

Nearly every plastic bottle ever made still exists today. Pass it on.
